Laguiole pattern knives are the most famous of the French regional style knives. Originating in the early / mid 19th century with the current footprint being established in the 1860’s as a blend of local straight bladed ‘laguiole droit’ and the Spanish navaja folders (which the story goes were introduced to the region from seasonally migrating French shepherds who brought them back from Spain after the winter months). There are plenty of stories told about the bee or mouche (fly) design on the backspring as well as the cross shaped pins on the handle. These features as well as secondary awl and corkscrews were added over time.
